Efudix (5-fluorouracil) and Aldara (imiquimod) are prescription creams used to treat certain sun-damaged skin conditions and some superficial skin cancers. They work directly on affected areas of the skin, helping to destroy abnormal cells and stimulate the body’s immune response where appropriate.
Efudix and Aldara can be useful for treating areas of sun-damaged skin, particularly actinic keratoses. These rough, scaly patches develop after long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and can sometimes develop into squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated.
Efudix contains 5-fluorouracil, which interferes with the growth of abnormal skin cells. When applied to the affected area as prescribed, the treatment can cause the abnormal cells to become red, inflamed, crusted or sore before the skin gradually heals. The treatment schedule depends on the condition and area being treated.
Aldara contains imiquimod, which stimulates the immune system to recognise and attack abnormal cells. It may be prescribed for conditions such as actinic keratoses and certain superficial skin cancers. Your doctor will advise how often and for how long the cream should be applied based on your individual diagnosis.

Both creams can cause a visible reaction in the treated area. Redness, irritation, swelling, scaling, crusting or discomfort can occur as abnormal cells respond to treatment. The intensity of the reaction varies between individuals and depends on the treatment area and duration. Following your clinician’s instructions is important for achieving the best outcome.
Efudix and Aldara are not suitable for every skin lesion, so an accurate diagnosis and medical assessment are important before treatment begins. At Epiderma Skin Cancer Clinic, our experienced skin cancer doctors can assess suspicious or sun-damaged areas, recommend an appropriate treatment option and provide follow-up care to monitor your skin’s response.
